The origins of afternoon tea

It is in the early 1840's that Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, is first credited with creating the concept of afternoon tea. She would request a small meal of bread, butter, and other treats, including cakes, tarts, and sweets to be taken secretly to her in her boudoir to curb her hunger prior to the traditional dinner time of 8.30 or 9 in the evening. When her snacking was uncovered she was not mocked as she had feared, but her habit caught on and the idea of a small meal of treats, and sometimes tea, became the height of fashion eventually becoming known as "afternoon tea".

Since then afternoon tea has evolved over time and was at its greatest during the popular tea dances of the early 1930’s. Today it is a special luxury primarily taken advantage of by ladies on a social outing with friends and for out of the ordinary celebrations.

Tiny Tim's Tearoom offers Afternoon Tea and Cream Tea available all day, accompanied regularly by live piano music transporting you back to a golden era of the popular 1930's in the ambience of our chandelier-lit tearoom.

Afternoon Tea at Tiny Tim's

Afternoon Tea.Our special Afternoon Tea is perfectly suited for a late lunch, early supper, or a well deserved treat before an evening meal. Served on a traditional three tiered stand it includes a variety of finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones, the finest miniature cakes and pastries… all topped off with a pot of tea!

High Tea. High tea is a variation on the afternoon tea theme with the finger sandwiches substituted for a poached egg on crumpets. If you fancy the theatre of afternoon tea, but want something hot instead of sandwiches - this is for you. It is accompanied by a scone with clotted cream and jam, and a selction of our miniature cakes and pastries and includes a pot of tea.

Cream Tea. Our Cream Tea is Tiny Tim’s version of a British classic. It is served on one of our tiered cake stands with all of the traditional trimmings: A pot of our Kenya Blend tea served with milk or lemon and two fruit or plain scones served with butter, jam and clotted cream.

Our menu includes 'Sausage Puffkins' which are our own take on the traditional sausage roll and 'Huffkins' - a traditional Kent soft bread roll flavoured by the hops and denoted by its characteristic dimple - stuffed with a variety of fillings and garnished with a fresh green salad.
